The Best BeReal Alternatives in 2026 (for Actually Seeing Your Friends)
BeReal had a great idea: one notification a day, two minutes to post, no filters. For a while it felt like the antidote to Instagram. But plenty of people now want the same honesty with a little more reason to open the app, or a format that fits their friends better.
Here are the alternatives worth your time in 2026, and what each one is actually good at.
One disclosure up front: we make BeThere, which is on this list. We’ve tried to describe every app fairly, including our own, and to say who each one is not for.
What people like about BeReal
Before swapping, it helps to know what you want to keep:
- No performance. Photos are quick and unedited, so nobody is curating a grid.
- Close friends only. Your feed is people you know, not influencers.
- It ends. You see today’s posts and you’re done.
- The surprise. The notification arrives at a random time, so everyone posts in the same moment.
The main complaints are the other side of that: the random timing often catches you on the sofa, so feeds fill with ceilings and laptop screens, and there’s not much to do together.
1. BeThere — for doing things together, not just posting
Best for: friend groups who want a reason to go out, not just a photo of where they already are.
BeThere gives everyone the same real-life challenge every day. There are three to pick from — easy, medium or hard — like “cook something you’ve never made” or “watch the sunset somewhere new”. You do it, post a photo or video as proof, and earn points that build a streak and a friends leaderboard.
The BeReal-like part: you only see your friends’ posts after you’ve posted yours, so there’s no lurking. Friends react with emoji or a selfie reaction. There’s also an occasional surprise “mystery” challenge with a short time window, and you can post a good deed instead of a challenge to keep your streak.
Good to know: it’s free and iPhone-only for now (an Android waitlist is open). There’s an optional Pro subscription for extras like a second daily challenge, but the core app is free.
Not for you if: you want a quick, zero-effort snapshot. Some challenges take an evening, and that’s the point.
2. Locket — for photos straight to a friend’s home screen
Best for: couples and very small groups who want tiny, constant check-ins.
Locket puts a widget on your home screen that shows the latest photo from your friends. You snap a picture and it appears on their home screen, and theirs on yours. The friend list is deliberately capped at 20, which keeps it personal.
Not for you if: you want a feed, a shared activity or anything that ends. It’s an ambient channel, not something you sit down with.
3. Retro — for a weekly photo journal
Best for: long-distance friends and people who don’t want to post every day.
Retro is a slower take: instead of a daily prompt, each friend shares a small set of photos from their week, shown as a card you flick through. You pick from the photos you already took that week, so there’s no camera in the app and no pressure to post in the moment. It’s free, with an optional paid tier.
Not for you if: you liked BeReal for its spontaneity. Retro is calmer and more curated.
4. Instagram Close Friends — for staying where everyone already is
Best for: groups who won’t install another app.
Close Friends Stories let you share to a short list you choose, which removes some of the performance of a public account. It’s not unedited and it’s not one-a-day, but everyone already has it.
Not for you if: the reason you liked BeReal was getting away from Instagram’s feed and its pull to keep scrolling.
5. A shared album and a group chat — the zero-app option
Best for: groups who just want to see each other’s days.
A shared photo album (Apple Photos or Google Photos) plus your group chat covers a lot: everyone adds a photo a day, nobody needs a new account. It works until someone forgets, which is usually by day four.
Not for you if: you need structure. Without a prompt, a streak or a reason, most groups drift.
Which one should you pick?
- You want to see your friends more, not just their photos: BeThere.
- You want a constant little window into one or two people’s day: Locket.
- You’d rather catch up weekly, calmly: Retro.
- Your friends refuse new apps: Close Friends or a shared album.
The best alternative is the one your friends will actually open. Whichever you try, invite two or three people on day one. Every one of these apps is only as good as the people on it.
If you’d like to try ours, BeThere is free on the App Store.
