How to Make Someone's Day: 30 Small Things That Actually Land

Almost everyone has the thought. You notice something nice about a person, or you remember they had a rough week, and a small voice says tell them. Then the moment passes and you don’t.

That gap — between thinking it and saying it — is where most of the kindness in the world quietly dies. Not because people are cold, but because it feels like it needs an occasion.

It doesn’t. Here are thirty things that actually land.

The ones that take under a minute

  1. Tell them the specific thing you admire, not a general compliment.
  2. Send the photo you took of them that they haven’t seen.
  3. Reply properly to the story they posted instead of tapping a heart.
  4. Text the friend you thought about this week and tell them you thought about them.
  5. Say “that was you, wasn’t it?” when they quietly fixed something.
  6. Thank the person who served you by name.
  7. Send someone the thing that reminded you of them — song, meme, article.
  8. Tell a friend’s parent something good about their kid.
  9. Leave a genuine review for a small place you like.
  10. Say the nice thing you’d say about them behind their back, to their face.

When someone’s having a hard week

  1. Ask a second question. Most people stop at the first.
  2. Say “that sounds genuinely hard” instead of trying to fix it.
  3. Bring food. Don’t ask what they want, just bring something.
  4. Offer a specific time, not “let me know if you need anything.”
  5. Sit with them and don’t fill the silence.
  6. Do the boring task they’ve been dreading — the form, the call, the dishes.
  7. Check in again three days later, when everyone else has stopped.
  8. Tell them what they’re good at, when they’ve forgotten.

For people you don’t really know

  1. Let someone go ahead of you when they’re clearly in a rush.
  2. Pay for the person behind you.
  3. Tell a stranger their outfit works. Then keep walking.
  4. Give up the better seat without making it a thing.
  5. Return the trolley, pick up the litter, hold the door.
  6. Tip in cash on a bad weather day.
  7. Tell someone’s manager they were good at their job.

The ones people remember for years

  1. Show up to the thing that matters to them but not to you.
  2. Remember the small detail they mentioned once, and ask about it later.
  3. Say the eulogy while they can still hear it.
  4. Introduce them to someone who can genuinely help them.
  5. Be the person who notices first that something’s wrong.

Why the vague ones bounce off

“You’re great” lands as politeness. “The way you handled that with your brother took guts” lands as being seen. That’s the difference, and it’s the whole trick:

Be specific. Name the actual thing. Specific means you were paying attention, and being paid attention to is the rare part.

Don’t attach a request. A compliment with an ask on the end is a transaction. Say the nice thing and then stop talking.

Do it late. Most people only say it in the moment or never. Saying it three weeks later — “I’ve been thinking about what you said” — hits far harder, because it proves it stayed with you.

Accept that it’s awkward. It will feel slightly too sincere. That feeling is not a sign you shouldn’t; it’s the reason it means something when you do.

The hard part isn’t the idea

Read that list again and notice how few of them are difficult. Almost none cost money. Most take under a minute. You could do six of them today without rearranging anything.

The hard part is remembering — the same reason we all have friends we love and haven’t messaged in four months. Good intentions lose to a normal Tuesday, every single time.

BeThere is built around that gap. Every day it gives you one small real-life challenge — often exactly this kind of thing — and your friends see it too, so it stops being something you meant to do and becomes something you actually did. Pick one from the list above and do it now, before this tab closes and the moment passes again.

Turn this into a daily thing

BeThere gives you and your friends one real-life challenge a day. Build streaks, share proof, stop doomscrolling.
